Two-Fold Gifts

I love to give gifts. My love language is gifts. I enjoy giving gifts even more than I enjoy receiving gifts (and I really like to receive gifts, so that should tell you how much I love to give gifts). There’s just something about selecting that gift that you know the other person really wants, or selecting something that holds some special meaning to them (and you), that just gets me. I guess it’s like that high that runners get after running. So this weekend, my daughters & I flipped through the World Vision gift catalog. As they pointed out that they want a pet pig, a pet cow, etc., I tried to explain what it means to give to others and how these gifts would help children, their families, their communities. Well, at 3 & 4, I don’t think they quite got it, but I do hope they grow to love giving as much as me (if not more so). In our home, we’re going to start making small gifts for others, to encourage my daughters to grasp the aspect of giving. And I also want to encourage you, in your gift giving this upcoming holiday season, to give two-fold gifts.

What is a two-fold gift?

A two-fold gift is something that benefits two different people – or maybe even more. And I’m talking a bit deeper than giving that person with bad breath a stick of gum. World Vision has a whole bunch of unique gifts that they give you for donating to the Maximum Impact Fund. My suggestion is that you make a donation in your friend/family member’s name & then give the World Vision gift to your friend/family member. The donation is applied to the Maximum Impact Fund to provide help where it’s needed most. And every time your friend/family member wears/uses your gift, they will imagine the person who made their gift and the people being helped around the world through World Vision.

What do you consider to be centsible?

For the moment, I’m going to focus on clothes, shoes & accessories. I’m streamlining my focus here at Centsible Style. I’ve been such an irregular blogger, and I have so much going on with my business, that I need to organize this blog in order to make sure I’m providing content you’re really interested in. I’ll be having polls along the way, so I can find out what you’re wanting to see and what’s relevant to you. I’ll still throw in posts from time to time on home decor, but for the most part, the focus right now will be on apparel. So, that brings me to my first set of questions:

What do you consider to be centsible?

What is the most you are willing to spend on a complete outfit?

Whole ensemble: with accessories & shoes?

Without shoes & accessories?

Most you’ll spend on shoes?

Most you’ll spend on accessories?

What about the ideal amount you’d like to spend on a whole ensemble?

Please post your responses in the comments below or send an email to kayla {at} centsiblestyle {dot} com.

xoxo, kayla

My $3 Earrings

Just a week ago, I was mentioning that my jewelry collection has dwindled & I posted some affordable Anthropologie earrings. A few days later, I took my daughters to Target to look at Halloween costumes. One of these years, I’m actually going to make their costumes. My grandma & mom made most of my costumes growing up & they rocked – plus they lasted a lot longer. I don’t have much time these days for diy projects, so we went to Target instead. While we were at Target, we stopped to look at their jewelry. And I entered dangerous territory: the aisle with jewelry on clearance. I managed to be pretty strong, but I just couldn’t leave that aisle without getting these earrings for $3:

They’re not the best quality, and the silver looking detail is plastic. But that works best for me, because my pierced ears can only wear really light earrings. And at $2.98, I just couldn’t pass them up!

Wide-Calf Boots!!

I’ve always had trouble with knee-high boots. I ordered my first pair of knee-high boots my senior year of high school from Zappos. They actually weren’t in style at the time (and Zappos was only a few years old). I ordered them for Air Rock (my high school’s lip syncing competition). We were performing as The Go-Go’s and wearing knee-high boots as part of our costumes. Plus, I was lead singer (or “syncer”), Belinda Carlisle, so I needed the boots – at least that’s what I used to “justify” the purchase. (And that Fall, boots were everywhere, so it was a good purchase.)

However, when the boots arrived, I was surprised to find I had trouble zipping them up. My legs have always been muscular, but at the time, I was a size 2-4, 120 lbs, and I thought they should “fit” better. I did get them zipped up, but I always wondered if there were boots made for wider calves. I would try boots on at stores, and they were tight, too, if I could get them zipped up at all. So, when I saw that Old Navy has wide-calf knee-high boots, I was super excited & wanted to share it with the world. Ok, well share it with all of you! And they’re cute, to boot! (I sure have been making a lot of corny jokes lately.)

Wide-Calf Boots in Cognac – $44.94

And that price? Well, it’s less than what I paid for my original knee-high boots 8 years ago!

Shop on!

The Limited BOGO: Pants, Skirts, Jackets & Dresses

Confession: I don’t shop in stores very often. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the physical shopping experience of holding items in your hand, feeling the quality of the material, trying items on, and carrying those new purchases around in bags. However, with four little kids to take care of, shopping trips have been rare…

Wear, Walk, Save & Shop!

Most health experts recommend a daily goal of 10,000 steps. The use of a pedometer can help you track your progress toward that daily goal. Wouldn’t it be great if that pedometer applauded you when you reached your goal of 10,000 steps? Okay, maybe that doesn’t sound very exciting to you. Let me try again….
